Elijah Cummings served in the United States House of Representatives from 1996 until his death in 2019. He was a man of faith who was a politician and a civil rights activist. According to Nancy Pelosi, current Speaker of the House, he was a beacon of hope to the people he served and to everyone in this country. He wanted all people in this country to live good lives and worked hard to make that happen. Despite the discouraging words from his teachers as he was growing up that he would not be able to be a good reader or writer,  Elijah rose above these low expectations of him to become college educated and to become a lawyer.
